Busy times for community games in Co Wexford

It has been a very busy time for Community Games with the table quiz, stage events and team finals taking place around the county. Entries were encouraging considering the long breaks over the past couple of years due to Covid where many of the Area committee ceased to operate. Thankfully most of those are up and running again and glad to be back.

n Thursday evening of last week the Under 14 Table Quiz competition took place in Bree hall. Quizmaster and quiz setter for the evening was Jim Doyle. The standard of answering throughout the 10 rounds was of a high standard with most teams amassing 70+ points overall. At the end of the competition, a team from Glynn/Barntown were clear winners on 84 points. Three teams were tied on 78 points, and all were from the Bree/Davidstown Area. It took another round of 5 questions to separate the teams for the silver and bronze placed medals. Well done to all the teams who competed. The gold medal winning team were comprised of Shane Kennedy, Oisin McCarthy, Chloe Casey and Leah Bolger. The silver medallists were represented by Patrick Faye, Roisjn Hensman, Zara Hickey, Tadhg Sheridan, Dylan Tyrrell and Noah Tyrrell, while the bronze medal team consisted of Fergal Doyle, Sean Kavanagh, Luke Ryan and Mark Smith.

On Friday evening last, the Stage events were held in Galbally hall and the audience were treated to some lovely dancing, singing, recitation, dance and music. The first half saw the under 12 section in action. First up on stage to entertain were a team of Siuin Allen, Niamh Kehoe and Eva Mullins in the Group Music. They were followed by Emma Eze from Tintern and Bella Cody from Rathgarogue/Cushintown in the Solo Dance section. Here Emma won the gold medal and Bella the silver medal. Joseph O’Donoghue and Theresa O’Donoghue from Bree/Davidstown competed in the Solo Singing section, where Joseph sang ‘Four & Ten’, while Theresa’s choice was ‘Paul & Nancy Hogan’. Gold medal to Joseph and silver to Theresa. Aoife Murphy from Glynn/Barntown and Lucy Roche from Rathgarogue/Cushinstown competed in the Recitation section, where Aoife gave a lovely rendition of ‘Saw my teacher on Saturday’ and Lucy’s choice was ‘Cats’. Gold here to Lucy and silver to Aoife. Siuin Allen, Eva Mullins and Lilly Reville from the Tahmon Area were the entrants in the Solo Music section, which was won by Siuin with Lilly in the silver medal position and bronze for Eva.

The under 16 section followed after the break and first up on stage was Kate O’Donoghue from the Bree/Davidstown Area who gave a lovely rendition of ‘Bunclody’ in the Solo Singing section. She was followed by Hannah Maher from Rathgarogue/Cushinstown who took on the difficult but lovely choice of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’.

Next up was Ciara Goddard from the Tahmon Area with ‘Traitor’ and Ava Reville from Tahmon brought that section to a conclusion. Gold here for Ciara, silver for Hannah and bronze for Ava. Stella Adewumi from the Tintern Area was the only competitor in the Solo Modern dance section. Well done to her. Mary O’Donoghue from Bree/Davidstown really entertained us with her rendition of ‘Mary Anne McGee’ in the Recitation section to win the gold medal.

In the Solo Music section, it was really great to once again hear the melodic sounds of the Harp, with not one but two of the competitors playing the same, Una Walsh from Barntown and Mary O’Donoghue from the Bree/Davidstown Area, while Ava Reville from the Tahmon Area played some lovely tunes on the Banjo. Gold medal went to Una Walsh, silver to Ava and bronze to Mary. In the Irish Dance section, Megan Moran and Erin Walsh (Glynn/Barntown) danced to some traditional Ceili music, while Kate, Mary and Theresa O’Donoghue from the Bree/Davidstown Area chose Sean Nos dancing. Gold to the trio from Bree/Davidstown and silver to the duo from Glynn/Barntown. Polina Babina and Jane Babina from the Piercestown/Murrintown Area concluded the nights competition and song two beautiful songs from their native Ukraine. Well done girls.
