Duncan McColl shares tips on how to start practicing karate

We reached out to longtime karate practitioner and teacher, Duncan McColl for his advice on how to get started practicing karate in the area.

McColl taught karate classes in Onekama prior to the COVID pandemic. He was also an instructor at Fabiano’s Karate New Holland Martial Arts in Holland.

MANISTEE NEWS ADVOCATE: How did you get started in karate?

DUNCAN MCCOLL: As a young man, I had been intrigued by the martial arts. However, I did not actually get started until much later in life.

I had a friend that was interested in joining one of the local schools but did not want to do it alone. I eagerly agreed to join with him, I was 33.

I fell in love with karate and have been practicing the discipline ever since. I started in 1993 practicing the Kobayashi Shorin-ryu style of karate.

I received my black belt in that style in 1997. I was so excited about karate, that in 1994 I agreed to start teaching classes at our school.

That is when I discovered that teaching is very rewarding. Along the way, our school switched styles to Matsumura Seito and I found that that style was more challenging but just as rewarding.
