LaViolette, Ficarra earn 19-6A baseball honors

District 19-6A baseball coaches recognized two award winners among a strong list of standouts following the 2022 regular season.

Tompkins senior outfielder Jace LaViolette was voted 19-6A Most Valuable Player after a tremendous year leading the district-champion Falcons. The Texas A&M University signee batted .601 with a .686 on-base percentage and .686 slugging percentage, hitting 11 home runs, 13 triples and nine doubles while driving in 51 runs and scoring 53 in 33 games.

Cinco Ranch sophomore outfielder Connor Ficarra was voted 19-6A Newcomer of the Year after a stellar varsity debut with the Cougars, who finished 15-12-2 this season.

Tompkins added a league-high seven players on the all-district first team. Senior first baseman Jack Little, senior second baseman Cash Russell, junior shortstop Drew Markle, junior utility player Ty Dagley and senior pitchers Trevor Esparza, Solomon Rotberg and Michael De Battista all made the top group.

The Falcons finished 29-4 with an 11-1 district record, two games ahead of the rest of the pack. They defeated Elkins 12-0 and 5-2, and Lamar 3-0, 4-5, 6-4 in the playoffs for their third area championship in four postseasons.

Region III-6A semifinalist Katy was represented on the first team by junior catcher Reese Ruderman, senior outfielder Jhonnatan Ferrebus and junior pitcher Lucas Moore.

The Tigers finished 30-9 with a 9-3 district mark and their longest playoff run since 2009. They defeated Travis 5-0, 1-0, Jersey Village 7-0, 7-4 and Taylor 3-0, 3-2 to advance to the semifinals.

Taylor enjoyed its best postseason run in eight years, defeating George Ranch 3-15, 12-0, 8-1 and Cy-Fair 4-3, 2-3, 1-0 for an area championship. The Mustangs finished 24-15 overall, including 8-4 in district for the No. 3 playoff seeds.

Junior designated hitter Hunter Ham and senior pitchers Jared Schaeffer and Matthew Irwin represented Taylor on the first team.

Junior outfielder Carlos Michinaux represented Seven Lakes on the first team. The Spartans finished 19-12 including a 7-5 district mark for the fourth and final postseason berth in 19-6A.

Cinco Ranch had four first-team selections in junior second baseman Rainer Castillo, junior third baseman Gavin Rutherford, senior outfielder Blake Hansen and junior outfielder Charlie Atkinson.

Paetow, Jordan rookies recognized

Katy ISD boasted the 19-5A Newcomer of the Year in both softball and baseball. Paetow and Jordan will play at the Class 6A level next year.

Shy’lynn Brown earned the award after an impressive debut for Paetow softball. She batted .397 with a .471 on-base percentage and a .506 slugging percentage, scoring 21 runs and driving in 14. Brown also pitched to a 5-2 record with a 5.36 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings.

Jordan infielder JD Ortigoza earned the award in baseball, leading a team making its varsity debut. He was the only Warriors player to make all-district.

Paetow made strides on both diamonds, including a 17-12 record in softball, with an 8-8 mark in league play.

Samantha Guillory made the 19-5A first team as an at large selection after batting .342 with a .495 on-base percentage and a .578 slugging percentage. Guillory hit three home runs, scored 30 runs, drove in 18 and stole six bases.

Pitcher Jade Catherwood was voted to the second team, while Mia Galarza, Peyton Luna and Alexis Rodriguez made an honorable mention.

Jordan softball was represented by second-team catcher Cady Bowyer and honorable mention Madeline Williams.

Paetow baseball had two first-team all-district selections in senior infielder Gabriel Velasquez and senior designated hitter Josh Prieto. The Panthers finished 16-13-1, including a 7-9 district mark, every win consecutively during an impressive stretch.
