Martial Arts Classes To Be Offered | News

Area residents who are interested in learning martial arts will soon have an opportunity to do so in Union City. Sifu Kyle Scherer of Sidney, Ohio will soon be offering Martial Arts classes at TRIBE Yoga and Wellness at 113 North Columbia Street in Union City. TRIBE was opened last year by Kelly Holmes and has been teaching courses in Yoga ever since.

Scherer grew up watching the television show “Kung Fu” starring David Carradine. The show sparked the young man’s interest in the martial arts. He and his cousins soon found a class being taught locally. Scherer’s cousins soon dropped out, but Kyle continued to pursue his interest in the martial arts. The 10-year-old Scherer soon found a school that he liked in Bellefontaine, and continued to take classes.

That interest has led to over 40 years of experience in various styles of martial arts. Sifu Scherer holds an eighth degree blackbelt and has been on the US team three times. He has even won a gold medal. Over the years, Scherer has looked to four teachers that he says have inspired him and influenced his fighting style. Randy Knox, an expert in Chinese Kenpo (also known as Chinese Kung Fu), has a “fighting ability like no other,” Parker Linekin, an American Kenpo Karate and Tai Chi master, is renowned for his “instructor ability,” Romeria Sandairs , instilled the “philosophical concepts underlying Filipino Kali martial arts and demonstrated how it was utilized during WWII,” and finally, Yan Moy, “she taught me the philosophy behind Kung Fu, which in Chinese means ‘hard work, skill, and effort, ‘” said Scherer.

Scherer has traveled throughout Ohio, California, Canada, and has even spent a considerable amount of time in China. During his third trip to China, he spent nearly two years near Beijing, earning his certification in traditional Chinese medicine and the healing arts. “We would also like to include some classes on things such as acupuncture,” stated Holmes.

During his travels, Sifu Scherer has met and gotten to know several of the stars of the shows and movies that he grew up watching. One of those who influenced Scherer the most is “Super Foot” Bill Wallace. “Super Foot,” a champion in kickboxing, was born in Portland, Indiana. He has appeared in movies with Chuck Norris, Jackie Chan. Wallace was a personal trainer and close friend of both Elvis Presley and John Belushi. It was Wallace, who unfortunately discovered his friend John Belushi dead from an overdose in 1982. Scherer has also gotten to know Cynthia Rothrock, a martial artist who starred in dozens of films in the 1980’s and 1990’s, quite well over the years. “We’ve been at a lot of the same contests,” said Scherer.

In 2008, Sifu Scherer opened his own Martial Arts School in Sidney, Ohio. “I believe we are the longest-running martial arts school in Sidney,” said Scherer. Scherer uses the term Sifu. The first character, or “Si”, means “teacher.” The second character, or “Fu,” means father. The term is widely used among martial arts schools and is an excellent description of the relationship between master and student. Sifu Scherer teaches both male and female students ranging from youngsters to the elderly. He offers classes in many disciplines at his school, including Karate, Chinese Kenpo, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Filipino Kali, Tai Chi, Kickboxing and MMA with Jujitsu among them.

This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents who are interested in martial arts to learn about them from a skilled master. Scherer’s classes at TRIBE will cost $10.00 per session. They will take place on Monday’s and Thursday’s, starting on June 9 at 5:00 PM for kids three and up. Adult classes will follow the kids classes at 6:00 PM. Union City students are also welcome to attend his classes in Sidney if the classes at TRIBE do not fit with their schedules.
