Music of the Mountains: Judo Chop

Judo Chop is not the first musical venture of any of the current members of the band. Drummer Cody Wales joined Judo Chop while on a break from his other band, The Magic Beans. He knew guitarist Brant Williams and bass guitarist Jiho Han for many years before that as members of the band The Workhy. He also knew keyboard player Eric Luba as a band member of Many Colors with Brant. Five or six years ago, they all joined together to create another band.

They cite their influences as bands and artists such as Stevie Wonder, Lettuce, J Dilla, and other folk and hip-hop artists. According to Wales, Williams and Han grew up and played music together in Iowa, and Luba originally grew up in New Jersey and eventually went to school in New York.

Wales grew up in Nederland, growing up in a musical family (his dad was a member of the band Leftover Salmon). He says that the funk and hip-hop sensibilities of their music tastes are what brings the group together.

Because the four are in other bands, they are often able to call friends from those other bands to fill in for them when they can’t make a gig. In this aspect, Wales cites the bands as ever-evolving and always changing from show to show depending on what the line-up is for each show.

For Wales, being able to perform music live allows both the audience and the musicians to live and be present in the moment, and he also believes that music is a great connector and healer. Evoking emotions in other people that they need to feel is something that the band takes great pride in, and they simply hope that they can make their audience members happy, allow them to enjoy the music, and encourage them to come back for more shows.

Be sure to check out Judo Chop live at the Gold Dirt Distillery/Stage Stop Backyard, 60 Main Street in Rollinsville, on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 4 pm
