Rowing Wins Murphy Cup for the First Time Since 1995

PHILADELPHIA – Temple Women’s Rowing won the Murphy Cup for the first time since 1995, defeating Georgetown by .32 seconds in the Varsity 8 race to cap a very successful day of racing at the 39th Memorial Murphy Cup Saturday on the Schuylkill River. The Owls competed in five events overall, earning two bronze medals and two gold medals in their home Regatta that included a total of 21 schools.

Top of the Podium
>Temple won the Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 events.
>Temple grabbed the bronze in the Varsity 4 and Novice 8.

“I’m beyond proud of the full team effort today”, said head coach Rebecca Grzybowski, “We get limited racing opportunities in rowing which is what makes each one so special. To see the team fully embrace race day execution and own their performance from start to finish was really exciting and energizing.”

“To medal in four events and ultimately bring the Murphy Cup home to Temple for the first time since 1995 with the V8 win is a fulfilling reward for a significant amount of consistent hard work.”

Varsity Eight
>Temple’s top boat in the morning heat recorded a 6:24.49 to outpace St. Joe’s, Lehigh, Washington College, and Marist.
> In the finals, the Owls won gold and took home the Murphy Cup with a time of 6:23.68.

Second Varsity Eight
>The Owls topped the heat round in the morning, securing a spot in the finals with a time of 6:44.60, faster to the finish than Delaware, La Salle and Colgate.
> In the finals, Temple won the gold with a time of 6:45.40, with Georgetown a distant second (6:54.05).

Novice Eight
>The Cherry and White went straight to the grand finals. The Owls placed took the bronze, recording a time of 7:10.25.

>Temple’s varsity four won its heat in a time of 7:21.35 to outpace West Virginia, Delaware, Jefferson, and Loyola. In the finals, the Owls took the bronze with a time of 7:28.78.
>The Owls’ second varsity four placed third in their heat with a time of 7:39.12. In the finals the Owls placed fourth with a time of 7:39.56.
