Sea Dogs Rally in Eighth Inning to Win Third Straight over Flying Squirrels

Portland, Maine – The Portland Sea Dogs (52-53, 22-14) used a five-run rally in the eighth inning to complete a comeback victory, 6-5 over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (51-53, 11-24) on Thursday at Hadlock Field.

Richmond brought in the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning against Portland starter Brian Van Belle. Michael Gigliotti led off the game with a single. Tyler Fitzgerald drove him home with a double to left field, giving the Flying Squirrels a 1-0 lead. One out later, Brett Auerbach grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Fitzgerald, increasing Richmond’s lead to 2-0.

The Flying Squirrels added another run in the top of the second with Van Belle still on the mound. Jacob Heyward led off the inning with a solo home run. It was his sixth homer of the year and put Richmond up 3-0.

The Sea Dogs scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the third with Flying Squirrel’s starter Kyle Harrison on the mound. Ceddanne Rafaela blasted a solo homer over the Maine Monster in left field. It was his ninth long ball of the season and brought Portland with two runs, 3-1.

After four scoreless innings for both teams, Richmond drove in two more runs in the top of the eighth. Fitzgerald led off with a base hit and Auerbach walked. Brandon Martorano doubled to center, plating Fitzgerald and Auerbach, adding to their lead, 5-1.

Portland got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning. Christian Koss led off with a single to left. Hudson Potts grounded into a fielder’s choice at second, and the relay to first was wide and found its way into the first base dugout, moving Potts to second. Izzy Wilson doubled down the right field line, scoring Potts to make it a 5-2 game. Nick Northcut was hit by a pitch and Tyler Dearden doubled to left, bringing in Wilson, cutting into Richmond’s lead 5-3. Wilyer Abreu pinch hit for Cameron Cannon and singled to right, scoring Northcut and advancing Dearden to third, making it 5-4. Wil Dalton blooped a base hit into center to drive in Dearden and tie the game, 5-5. Elih Marrero singled on a grounder to first base, bringing around Abreu to give the Sea Dogs a 6-5 lead.

Michael Gettys took the mound in the save situation for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the ninth. The Flying Squirrels loaded the bases, but Gettys struck out Auerbach, ending the game in a 6-5 comeback win for the Sea Dogs.

Rio Gomez (1-0, 5.40 ERA) pitched 2.0 in relief, allowing two runs on two hits, walking one, and striking out three in his first win of the season. Nick Avila (0-1, 1.35 ERA) recorded two outs, surrendering one run on three hits in his first loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels play the fourth game of a six-game series on Friday with a 6:00 PM first pitch at Hadlock Field. Portland sends RHP Bryan Mata (2-2, 2.93 ERA) to the bump against Richmond RHP Kai-Wei Teng (5-7, 5.09 ERA).
